Escort towage — there so that nothing happens
An escort tug is not there to add power; it is there in case steering or propulsion is lost. Its value is usually measured by never being needed.

01Why escort
In a restricted waterway, decision time is short
When steering is lost in a narrow channel or a busy strait, the time left for corrective action is measured in seconds rather than minutes. That is precisely why an escort tug exists.
Escorting means running in a defined position astern or alongside, ready to connect. Where needed, the tug applies braking and steering forces to bring the vessel back under control.
Whether a transit calls for an escort depends on vessel type, cargo, dimensions, weather and local authority rules. On some transits it is mandatory; on others it is a risk-management choice.

02When it applies
Situations where escort matters most
Strait and canal transits
Where traffic density, current and turning points combine, the margin for a manoeuvring error is small.
Sensitive or high-risk cargoes
With cargoes carrying environmental or fire risk, the consequence of losing control is not confined to the vessel.
Large-dimension vessels
Large lateral windage and deep draft markedly increase exposure to wind and current.
Adverse weather
In strong wind or poor visibility, even a routine transit can justify an added layer of safety.
03Planning
What governs an escort plan
- Transit window
- Planned transit time, current state and traffic density determine where the tug meets the vessel.
- Bollard pull
- The pulling and braking force required, based on the vessel’s size, draft and windage.
- Connection method
- Made-fast or free-running escort; towline arrangement and connection points are agreed in advance.
- Communication plan
- The channel and command language between master, pilot and tug are settled before the transit.

A request made early is a planned operation
When an escort request comes in with enough lead time, tug positioning, connection method and the communication plan are agreed in advance. For last-minute requests, availability cannot be guaranteed.
